Career Leg-Up! 5 Simple Steps (plus DVD offer)
Want to learn a unique, effective way to boost your career and support your job search? Read about Yvette Francino in my Coloradoan column this Sunday, Nov. 15, '09 While I won't reveal too many details here (you'll see them Sunday!), I will walk you through an enlightening, career-building exercise right now that's related to what Yvette's been doing.
First answer this question: What three websites or resources can help keep you clued into the latest trends and developments in your field? Can't think of them? No worries! This exercise will be especially helpful to you:
>> CAREER LEG UP EXERCISE
>> Step 1:
Log onto your favorite search engine, and input YOUR SPECIALTY (fill this in) combined with one or more of these keywords:
"Trends, Blog, Developments, Research, Advances, News"
So you might search on "Customer Service Management Advances", for example. Then follow this process:
>>Step 2.
Scan the links the search produced. Seek out lead-ins that relate to your interests and career needs, plus look for current dates. When I input, "Career Counseling Trends" for my own research, the top link was for an article written in 1988...yikes!
>>Step 3.
Quickly click through a number of possible links. Skim articles or blogs to see if the info is on track for your needs. When you hit on a promising resource, make note of any trends or terminology that could benefit you. For instance, when I input the keywords, "Career Counseling News" I located a recent article about a blood bank that offers free career counseling for donors (well, you're stuck in a chair anyway...why not do something productive with your time, right?). That hit me as a great potential marketing technique...as well as a way to provide a valuable community service.
>>Step 4.
Create a list of sites (or sign up to automatically receive new posts), that you want to check out regularly. Just 15 minutes each week spent reviewing up-to-date info about your speciality will position you miles ahead of 90 percent of your colleagues.
