Secrets of the Job Hunt

Career Advice Podcasts & Job Seeker Network

I have a "not-so-usual" situation. I am a 1st Assistant Director, which means I run the show. On a television program, feature film, or commercial, the director directs the camera and talent, my job is to direct everything else. I deal with issues that arise on set, handle paperwork, wrangle actors, motivate and manage staff, make sure the production is in compliance with union contracts, direct background extras, and generally oversee all the departments. My problem is that I live in Missouri and the governor closed our film office last year, so much of my business has dried up and I'm finding myself in need of a new career. I was thinking a supervisory role or team leadership/management. I have many transferable skills and have rewritten my resume to reflect that. I'm running into repeated difficulty convincing mainstream employers that my experience running sets will be useful in operating their business and am looking for advice on how to be more convincing both in cover letters and interviews.

How's this going? Where are you at in your search?

Not good so far. I obtained employment at a repackaging plant in my area as a production worker. Hut the pay is not competitive and am often sent home due to lack of work. As of yesterday I obtained a chauffeur's license and am hoping to work as a driver soon for a better rate of pay. One thing that is looking up is that my friend is a country musician and has been rapidly climbing the charts. He has asked me to manage his summer tour. That job however will not get underway for a few months. So I am still looking for supervisory roles and management positions in the mean time.

Jayson, Where in Missouri do you live?  The reason that I ask is that I might have some contacts for you there as I have lived in KC and Central Mo.
