Career Advice Podcasts & Job Seeker Network

Question: How do I get/build up my network to get a job? (See my situation below)

Man alive!!! Did I ever make the mistake of a life-time. I am a truck driver who got "released" from my former employer due to accidents (In an effort to do a good job, I got into a hurry and got into some minor traffic accidents). And now, I cannot find a job. I really do not have any other job skills so I am finding it hard to get a job. I was there driving a truck for 8 years at my former employer. So I know that I can do the job. Lack of experience is not the issue and my driving record is.

This was the kind of job where I didn't make many friends because I was in one place one day and in a different place the next day. So I didn't develop a network. It is what they call OTR (over the road) trucking. How do I start to develop a network when I really don't know anybody except a few people at my former employer?

I recently starting doing some volunteer work in a Goodwill warehouse and I find that very satisfying but don't expect any job offers from this position. So that helps me take my mind off my troubles.

What am I supposed to do with the rest of my life since I am only 42 years old? I don't have the money to go to school to retrain to a different field. So that is not option. I was looking for some ideas on a new career that a lot of on the job training. I just need to get my foot in the door but I am finding that a little hard to do in this economy.

Hello. I recommend taking a real, hard look at what your goals are in the job search as well as what interests you. Make a list and then develop your job search/target jobs from there.

Once you have an idea of the industry or position you are targeting your search, you can be more specific in how you tailor your resume and applications. Depending on your selection, you should also consider obtaining additional training at Vo-tech schools. Many offer a reasonably priced class for things like welding, computer design, or even a culinary arts. Most of these classes are short term and allow you to learn and develop a new skill all for anywhere between $50-200.

Best of luck!

Putting the Right Social Media Face First

How To Never Miss Your Next Big Job Opportunity

Opportunities are all around us. We just have to know how to spot them and when to accept them.In terms of finding a new job, closing yourself off to new opportunities is one of the worst things you can do. In the current job market, you are competing not only with people in your previous industry, but also with others who are open to new opportunities. On the other hand, by opening yourself up, you flip this argument in your favor. You now have many more jobs available to you and are competing…See More
