The Help - in society, in families, at work

The movie "The Help" is getting noticed because people who see it, recommend it to everyone they know. That's called cinema networking. It happened with The BlindSide. And, like The BlindSide, there are many story layers to The Help.I didn't grow up in the south, but I remember the 60's culture very well. Bridge clubs, pearls, the right clothes, the right address and, most importantly, the right husband. As a woman, your social status was directly tied to WHO you married and WHERE you…See More

Parade Magazine - Cleavage - and Common Sense

I recently had the opportunity to sit and watch people come through the door to go to work in an 18 story office building.  Many of the tenant companies are recognized corporate names, but to look at the attire of the people coming through the doors, you would have thought most of them, especially the women, worked for the cleaning crew.I made a quick check sheet - men on one side - women on the other with a plus or minus each time someone came through the door.  Of the 40 men who came through…See More

Getting Along - in the workplace.

People are working longer.  It looks as though they'll raise the retirement age to 70 (for now).  Companies will become more diverse and the greatest challenge will be older/experienced workers managed by younger, well-educated professionals.  And age matters.  By that I mean, the older worker brings knowledge (and sometimes a set way of doing things); the younger worker brings new ideas, a fresh set of eyes (and a resistance to suggestions from those who are older). It has many of the…See More

Long Term Employment - Not Likely

I recently had the unique opportunity to conduct workshops at a manufacturing facility recognized by the communities surrounding it as a "destination employer"  ie - a great place to go to work, stay there and retire.  Some of the perks of employment amazed me - - and I stressed over and over again they would not find those perks in a new job - - ever (ie a dedicated smoking room, extended breaks, 3 weeks vacation the first year of employment). As each participant introduced themselves and said…See More

Jonathan Duarte commented on Kay Stout's blog post 'Network = Net Worth'
Kay, Excellent Article. Excellent examples.   Networking, in the traditional sense of attending "networking meetings" to shake hands and kiss babies isn't an attractive idea for most people, especially introverts.   I think…

Network = Net Worth

On my radio show Sunday evening, Matt Crevin- the voice of the 49er's (for non-football fans - that's the San Francisco professional football team) - made several references to the importance of building your networth through your network.  He's right.  The challenge, though, is that it takes time to build a network and you must stay in touch with your contacts. Here are two real-life examples from my wonderful file of war…See More

College Graduate - No Job

This will be an ongoing blog - I'll just simply add to it in the coming weeks.I'm working with BE, who will graduate from a small, private college in December.  His major is accounting and accounting graduates from this school are told they will be highly recruited (when they enroll - - they're told this).  He graduates in December and has had little, actually no, success in securing either an internship or a "real job" with a paycheck to look forward to once he changes the tassel on his cap. He…See More

Ted Williams - Ron Franklin - Pan American - the power of video

A long time ago (no this is not a fairy tale) in Miami, Florida and Clinton, Oklahoma - I discovered the power of television -- today that power is shared with the internet. An Oklahoma soccer team, headed to Brazil, was stranded at the Miami airport because of a snafu in their tickets.  After 2 days, it looked as though the players and the parents would have no choice but to return to Oklahoma.  I went to bed that night thinking "who do I know" that can help us.  The next morning, I got the…See More

Oath of Honor - Thunderbird School of Global Management - Kelly School of Business, Indiana University

I had the privilege of attending the graduation ceremony for students enrolled in a dual program from Thunderbird School of Global Management and Kelley School of Business,  Indiana University.   Thunderbird has a unique history, but what intrigued me at the ceremony was the recitation, by the graduates, of the  Oath of Honor, written by the student-run Thunderbird…See More

Facebook - My Space - Internet Power - Hiring Practices - Wikipedia

The Genie is out of the bottle - and you can't put it back. Two recent events are telling examples of the fact that no one knows how to effectively utilize (but not abuse) the internet.#1) - the wiki leaks - - I'm reminded of how Charlie Wilson helped the Afghans in 1980 and, today, those important meetings would never happen.#2) - Facebook's new look - I understand that you can now more easily categorize your life for your friends. But I'm not sure anyone at FB fully understands the…See More

Kay Stout commented on Chris Russell's blog post 'Trader Joes: best paying retail jobs'
I find it fascinating (and wish it were more common) to read about companies that truly take care of their employees. What is even more amazing is Trader Joe's is owned by the founder of Aldi's (he recently passed away - so I do not know…
