Melanie Szlucha replied to Beverly Wainio's discussion 'Resume is not an application'
Hi Beverly, Actually I just talked to someone today with that same situation. You need to address what you've been doing since 2002 in some way, otherwise as an employer I'm more suspicious that you've been doing nothing (and will…

Wanna Ace the Interview? Find Out What the Employer Really Wants

If you’re getting close…but not sealing the deal in your job interviews, you can learn a lot by figuring out what the employer really wants. When evaluating how well the job interview went, don’t think about it from YOUR perspective. Your perspective doesn’t translate into a hill of beans relative to the employer’s perspective. Here’s what I mean. Many times when I talk to clients and ask how the interview went, they’ll tell me about how great the job was, the location was perfect for them, the…See More

How Hard Is Your Resume Working? And How Do You Fix It?

Continuing the series of putting your job search through the scrutiny of a performance review, let’s talk about resumes.I look at resumes all the time, either from jobseekers like you looking for help, or for the occasional small business recruiting gigs I do. I also have 15+ years of experience of hiring people to work for me in various positions throughout my career. And the one thing that held true then, and now.As an employer all I care about is: What’s on your resume that I need?  That’s…See More

Talking About Achievements in a Job Interview

At first glance, the sound bites you think of for Achievements can seem very similar to what you developed for Overcoming Obstacles--and that’s OK.  Remember that the key to the acronym is to use it as a tool to remember topics to discuss on a job interview.  Preparing what you’re going to talk about on an interviewer in advance empowers you to succeed instead of feeling like a sitting duck wondering what they could possibly ask.  Achievements are a place for you to brag about things you have…See More

Melanie Szlucha commented on Melanie Szlucha's blog post 'The #1 Way to Kill a Phone Interview'
Hi Yolanda, Basically, it's the same types of questions you would get in an in-person interview. In most cases it's the recruiter or HR person doing a preliminary phone screen of candidates. They're looking for your energy, level of…

Morty Melia commented on Melanie Szlucha's blog post 'Annoying People Don't Get Hired'
I know this post is a little old but I just saw a link to it on Twitter and had to make a quick comment. As a recruiter who has to deal with the red tape of HR (and tries to avoid it at all costs), and also as a job seeker, I agree with some parts…

Why "just waiting for them to make me an offer" is the wrong thing to do

You searched and searched and searched, and finally feel pretty sure that a company is going to make you an offer. The interviews have gone well, maybe they’re even checking references. You run out to get a nice bottle of bubbly and wait for the good news.Only, it doesn’t come.Within the past 2 weeks alone, I’ve had this happen to my clients and even met someone who was offered a job, but had the offer rescinded before they started. The unfortunate thing is that all of these people put off…See More

Job interview success is in the details--the handshake

People form impressions of others based on the smallest details. Perhaps when you read this message line you laughed at how improbable it would be to NOT get a job offer because your handshake was too strong or too weak.Well, you’re right, it doesn’t work that way. However, it IS one of the details that people use to form an impression of you. We’ve all been the recipient of those bone-crushing, gee-I’d-like-to-USE-that-hand-in-the-future handshakes. Think about the impression you form of the…See More

I especially like the car shopping part of the post, that can provide the, "aha, I get it" moment. A colleague of mine takes the perspective that situations are annoying and tries to give people the benefit of the doubt - very noble of…

Laura Smith-Proulx Resume Writer commented on Melanie Szlucha's blog post 'Annoying People Don't Get Hired'
I hope many job hunters take your story to heart. I recall distinctly trying to "turn off" my intuition and the chemistry component during my recruiting years, and it was quite difficult. You have made a key point that, even with all the…

Annoying People Don't Get Hired

I love it when conversations with my HR Director friend Lauren start with: “You’ve GOT to write about this.” I know it’ll be a juicy example. Here’s the situation. Lauren’s colleague referred a jobseeking friend to her. There was an open position that could be a fit, so she passed along the resume, and told her friend to give Lauren a call.So the jobseeker (we’ll call her Denise) calls Lauren to touch base and see that she got the resume OK. Great, fine. Standard protocol. Lauren knows that it’s…See More

Great suggestions. I sometimes can get tongue-tied when approaching someone new, so these are some good ideas to keep in my library of conversations starters.

You'll Up Your Odds of Getting a Job If You Apply for What You're Qualified For

We all know that the job search is really, really tough, and you deserve every break you can get.  Don’t inadvertently make it tougher on yourself by applying for jobs that you’re not qualified for.

There are times when it’s perfectly fine to stretch and apply for the job that is at the next level in your career.  You can network to build up your personal connections, or outline your achievements in your cover letter when you apply for the job.  That’s how you advance…

Piercings, Tattoos and Losing Job Offers...oh MY

Several years ago I spoke in front of a college audience and got what has since proven to be one of the most interesting questions I’ve had as a speaker—Tattoos. Students were wondering how employers felt about tattoos and male/female multiple piercings when conducting job interviews.

I can understand that it's difficult to figure out how to handle the situation.  On one hand, you want the ability to express yourself, and you know that any physical adornments will…
