I know this post is a little old but I just saw a link to it on Twitter and had to make a quick comment. As a recruiter who has to deal with the red tape of HR (and tries to avoid it at all costs), and also as a job seeker, I agree with some parts o…

I especially like the car shopping part of the post, that can provide the, "aha, I get it" moment. A colleague of mine takes the perspective that situations are annoying and tries to give people the benefit of the doubt - very noble of him. Even th…

I hope many job hunters take your story to heart. I recall distinctly trying to "turn off" my intuition and the chemistry component during my recruiting years, and it was quite difficult. You have made a key point that, even with all the advantages…

Great suggestions. I sometimes can get tongue-tied when approaching someone new, so these are some good ideas to keep in my library of conversations starters.

I've been in this situation as a hiring manager. I needed to hire for a new position, the workload was there, I started screening and interviewing candidates, and it all looked promising. Then BAM! My company would lose a key account, and the posit…

As a hiring manager I've placed ads for candidates, reviewed resumes and conducted job interviews, all with the nagging feeling--is there really a great candidate hidden behind a not-so-great resume or job interview? Am I hiring the person who simp…

About Me:
I use my 15+ years as a hiring manager and background in marketing to help people clearly and enticingly convey their relevant talents on a resume or in a job interview. The key is making that connection between what an employer wants and what the jobseeker brings to the table. I also provide job search coaching that helps people learn to better read job descriptions and avoid much of the frustration of applying to jobs and not getting a response.

Why "just waiting for them to make me an offer" is the wrong thing to do

You searched and searched and searched, and finally feel pretty sure that a company is going to make you an offer. The interviews have gone well, maybe they’re even checking references. You run out to get a nice bottle of bubbly and wait for the good news.

Only, it doesn’t come.

Within the past 2 weeks alone, I’ve had this happen to my clients and even met someone who was offered a job, but had the offer rescinded before they started. The unfortunate thing is that all of these people put off m… Continue

Job interview success is in the details--the handshake

People form impressions of others based on the smallest details. Perhaps when you read this message line you laughed at how improbable it would be to NOT get a job offer because your handshake was too strong or too weak.

Well, you’re right, it doesn’t work that way. However, it IS one of the details that people use to form an impression of you.

We’ve all been the recipient of those bone-crushing, gee-I’d-like-to-USE-that-hand-in-the-future handshakes. Think about the impression you form of the… Continue

Annoying People Don't Get Hired

I love it when conversations with my HR Director friend Lauren start with: “You’ve GOT to write about this.” I know it’ll be a juicy example.

Here’s the situation. Lauren’s colleague referred a jobseeking friend to her. There was an open position that could be a fit, so she passed along the resume, and told her friend to give Lauren a call.

So the jobseeker (we’ll call her Denise) calls Lauren to touch base and see that she got the resume OK. Great, fine. Standard protocol. Lauren knows that i… Continue

I’ll always be a wallflower…
You mean I have to talk to people I don’t even KNOW???

Recently I’ve been speaking more and more about “networking,” and I’ve found that it’s one of those topics that people honestly don’t think they can learn how to do. They figure that there are two types of people in this world, those that are awesome networkers, and everyone else in the sea of humanity. So they resign themselves to awkwardly standing by… Continue
