Being qualified isn't good enough anymore.
This is a tough thing for most candidates to swallow. It's tough because we've been taught to present our qualifications when we try to sell ourselves for a job ... but it's just not enough anymore.
... It's not enough because there are…

We were taught how to write a resume that focused on our responsibilities.
This is traditional job search 101.
This made sense for a long time, from WWII until 2007, when there were candidate and skills shortages. When there were skills shortage, it made sense to focus on…

Let’s face it, we’ve all failed at one point or another. How can you demonstrate your failure in a positive light to employers, so that it’s just as positive as your successes?
One of the best examples of failure comes from someone we only identify with success. That’s the reason this quote…

Many job seekers don’t use their Linkedin networks and personal contacts to their greatest potential.
We tend to focus on people we are most comfortable with, the ones we know best. Why? I'm guessing it's due to a natural fear of rejection from those we don't know all that…

Experiencing ageism is demoralizing.
Why can't employers see that our experience and wisdom makes us more valuable than someone 20 years our junior?
It's especially frustrating, because our parents didn't experience ageism, so we don't expect to be discriminated against based on…

If you've ever been frustrated that you weren't called (or emailed) when you were "perfect" for a job ... there's probably a reason you weren't called.

Had a look at your blogs and they're really useful and informative. I have recently started a Work in Europe Ning group for people who want to work/recruit in Europe. Would you mind if I put an RSS feed to your blog on my site? It would be fantastic to have a regular input of excellent job hunting advice on the site! :-) I realise that you are based in the states, but if you happen to know anyone who has expertise in recruiting in Europe/abroad, then please let me know, I'd be really grateful!
Kind regards
Samantha
I sent you a comment on reCareered regarding the Cover Letter topic. I was surprised to see that you did not post it. Was that because you have not received/read it or because it was not of interest? Would be interested in your thoughts.
You're not the 1st to mention WordPress so I guess I'll have to join the ranks.
Meanwhile I'm taking a Features Writing class in hopes of doing some freelance writing (for a fee). Any suggestions or ideas about whom to pitch or associations to join?
Thanks.
