Job Posting Problem: “I don’t meet all the position requirements”

“I’m not qualified”
“I don’t have a (bachelors/masters) degree”
“I don’t meet all the requirements”

How many times have you uttered these words when reading a job posting? Countless times, job seekers stop reading a job ad or posting once they find they don’t meet a requirement. They don’t bother to read the rest of the posting, instead convincing themselves they don’t qualify. I’m here to tell you that if you are interested in a position and possess many skills and abilities that would be great in the job, you should consider applying. Job postings are guidelines for the recruiting organization and not always hard-line rules. Many times organizations don’t specifically know what they want in a candidate and so they include generic terms as requirements. For example, whether the position warrants it or not they may include, “must have degree.” Except for instances where a job is mandated by state or federal law, a degree may not be required-- especially if you can demonstrate equivalent experience and have had significant on-the-job training. This “requirement” may very well be negotiable for the right candidate—You!

So the next time you read a job posting, make a list of their “requirements” and “preferred” items. Next see how many you match. You don’t have to match all of them. If there is a requirement listed and you have equivalent experience or training consider that a match. When ready to apply, use your cover letter as your talent showcase. Highlight your talents and describe how they meet the goals of the position and overall company. You may end up highlighting an important talent the company did not list or you may help them discover that you are qualified for another position --not yet posted. You will only know if you try.

Thus, I encourage you to take a chance and apply. The worst thing that can happen is you end up back where you started. On the other hand, you could be missing a chance at an exciting new position, and new levels of prosperity. You have nothing to lose, but much to gain. Here’s to success on your upcoming victory!

If you don't have the qualifications they list, your resume will be tossed---you definetely need to find another way to be seen b/c your resume will not speak to the intangible qualities you have to offer.

WOW...this is a two edge sword that you are going after here with bare hands and no handle. Surely you will get cut. Job requirements are simple - they are requirements. If they are not, they would be under nice to haves, preferred skills and the like. If you do not have the skills, applying will do nothing more than get your name thrown into the delete box with the others. If you are truly interested, call the company, get the manager and discuss. Too many people already apply online and find it to be a dead end. Applying and not having the skills required is not the way to improve the application process nor your chances of success.
