A Self-Proclaimed Network-Hater Turns to Tweet-Ups

A self-proclaimed network-hater: That was me, until I lost my job in January and had to reconsider my position on networking. The mere thought of making small talk with strangers; then passing out my business card only to go back to my ‘secure’ job the next day always seemed like a waste of time.

Knowing I had to “put myself out there,” I attended a few networking events, collected business cards and completed the traditional follow up afterwards. Yet I didn’t feel that I was making any ground. I felt I was doing it wrong. I felt lost. I thought it would take practice, and I kept at it. But then it hit me: you have to find networking that works for you, not you working it. The key: know thyself, know what makes you comfortable.

For me, I know I’m more comfortable in smaller, more casual settings. I prefer quality over quantity and deeper, more intimate conversations. For this, I discovered local Tweet-Ups, where like-minded people following each other on Twitter meet up in person. My job search involves looking for a career in social media, so I look to Tweet-ups to meet other social media enthusiasts and chat about trends in the industry. I’m networking and gaining professional development all at the same time. How’s that for efficiency!

At the Tweet-ups, we share our experiences on Twitter, things we like, things we don’t and of course, the standard “where do you work,” “what do you do” question always comes up. And even when it gets to this point, it doesn’t feel contrived. It feels natural. You’re open to talk work if you want, but if you just want to say,”Hello, my name is Amy and I’m a reality TV junkie,” that’s okay too. No one will think you’re unprofessional or shallow. An added bonus, the conversations don’t stop when you head for the door, they continue online, avoiding dreadful follow up calls. Instead, follow ups become integrated with your daily activities as you interact through your Twitter chats.

I’m now a huge fan of the Tweet-Up and am happy to have found a networking niche that works for me. What works for you?
