Career Discovery & the Silver Screen

I saw an ad for the Golden Globe awards and caught a bit of Oscar Fever.

Movies on the big screen have an uncanny ability to inspire, motivate and persuade. My favourite one's are related to the human condition, where someone makes a discovery (good or bad) that changes the course of their life.

Even if you aren't a fan of Julie and Julia, it's worth a glance to see how the protagonists carved out careers for themselves (one chicken leg at a time). Both ladies were government workers with an itch to do something more. You can take inspiration from their perserverance and obsession in the midst of rejection and set-back.

Another tale of career discovery is The Great Buck Howard. It's about one man's longevity as a b-rated "mentalist" performer with his young assistant Troy Gable - a law school drop-out played by Colin Hanks (son of Tom). By the end Troy musters the courage to pursue his genuine career insterest after seeing that sudden fame didn't make Buck any better, but ironically relinquished his true talent, which later returns.

If you're up for some inspiration on career discovery, you can take a career assessment test (boring...) or rent some movies, make a plan and then go for it.
