When applying to job posting, read the job posting carefully and pay close attention to the requirements. The requirements of the job opening contains keywords that the Recruiter, Hiring Manager, Hiring Company is looking for in the candidates they are looking to interview for their open positions.
Example Job Ad
Staffing Recruiter Needed
Must have:
2-3 years experience in name sourcing, interviewing, conducting job fairs and cold calling.
So looking at the Ad above, you would need to include similar keywords within your previous job duties (name souring, interviewing, conducting job fairs, cold calling).
To help with adding keywords to your resume, review several job posting for the type of job you are looking for and look at what the ad writer is looking for. More than likely, the person who wrote the job ad is the one doing the hiring. Interchange these keywords with some of the words on your resume were appropriate.
The bad news is that there are just as many keywords as there are job openings. You will find many different keyword lists on job board ads and online with possible words that are highly searched for. That does not necessarily mean those particular keywords will match the position for which you are seeking. Just like performing a search on an internet search engine, no one person searches for the exact same phase each time.
Here are some suggestions to help get you started with adding those keywords to your resume.
· If you were the one doing the hiring for the position that you are interested in and think about it, “What keywords would I search for in looking for someone for this position?”
· Never add a long list of irrelevant keywords to your resume!
· Biggest tip of all, use Microsoft Word -Open your resume in MS Word
