One reader responds to my query on writing cover letters:
Lose the played-out, unoriginal adjectives, such as: I'm highly organized; I'm a people person; I'm a team player. Rather, tell me how you used your organizational skills to make or save your boss money. Give me an example of when you either worked with or led a team to complete a project that helped your boss make or save money. See a pattern here?
When I posted an ad for a legal assistant I got innundated with hundreds of resumes and cover letters but very few stood out for the above reason. Most appeared as if they were copied directly from a cover letter book. I know because I worked for others before opening my own law firm and I read a lot of the same cover letter books.
