Secrets of the Job Hunt

A tip to resume writers and job hunters.....

If you're going to embellish your resume.... check your facts!!!!

I was reviewing resumes a few weeks ago for an open position on our team. As you can imagine, we received literally HUNDREDS of resumes, most of which were nowhere near qualified, or even relevant to the open, posted position. I've had to adopt the process of scanning the "qualifications" section for key-words and stacking the interesting ones in a pile for further review. I found a promising one and tucked it away to review later.

After another cup of coffee and sorting through the mound of incoming paper, I decided to devote a bit of time to the "interesting" pile. As I dug through the stack and came across a very promising candidate only to realize that this person had Googled, but not understood. The "methodology" he subscribed to was completely wrong! He had referenced a methodology but had completely mangled the name! (Kirk Patrick, instead of Kirkpatrick) He elaborated on how he had used "Mr. Patrick's" methodology time and again to develop outstanding deliverables. Yes, he caught my attention and yes, I was entertained but ask me if he got an interview....

Google is a great tool, but it dangerous in the hands of a desperate job seeker. Use it with caution!

Absolutely, agree with you, Daniel. At least once a week I get a phone call or email asking for Jennifer Miller-Merrell. My name is Jessica. Most candidates don't even realize the error even when I correct them. However, it's the small things that make a difference especially when the market is so flooded with candidates. Proper research and preparation can make all the difference.

Daniel,

Great post. Dangers of "google dropping" abound, particularly when tired. I especially like your header, though I fear too many of today's college students haven't seen American Pie (a must-see in my book)...I'm going to add on to your advice with a follow-up post.

Cheers,
Chandlee

How To Never Miss Your Next Big Job Opportunity

Opportunities are all around us. We just have to know how to spot them and when to accept them.In terms of finding a new job, closing yourself off to new opportunities is one of the worst things you can do.
