Secrets of the Job Hunt

Career Advice Podcasts & Job Seeker Network

Earlier this week I posted a video about Paula’s unconventional job search. In the video, Paula stands on the corner of a busy intersection, knocking on windows and handing out her business card, asking people for leads and connections to help in her job search. As I watched this, I thought, “This is thinking outside the box, this is ingenuity,” things that employers are desperately seeking.

So thanks to Paula, I started to brainstorm on other out of the box, marketing techniques job seekers may want to consider to get noticed in this highly competitive market. I personally, haven’t tried these, but after watching Paula, I’m inspired that with a little creativity and persistence that a unconventional job search can yield positive results.

1) Rent online space or place a banner ad on a website within your particular industry.
2) Rent a billboard on a busy street in the business district of your target market.
3) Develop a postcard that highlights your skills and experience.
4) Print your resume on a t-shirt and wear it when you frequent the local lunch counter. It’s important to go at peak times in your target area for maximum benefit. This woman did.
5) Create a video resume. These are gaining in popularity as YouTube provides a platform for easy distribution. A good example.

What other ideas do you have?

#2 worked with a summer student in my community. Napa autor parts hired her as a driver.
Other tricks:
leave a partial voice mail with employers off hours
Kevin Donlin's suggestion of coffee mug and following up with an employer to request a meeting\
send a purulator or FedEx letter or package for a job you really desire
Send a report to a potential employer about what his/her competitor is doing and how you would improve the botoom line at company A
Calculate how being hired would save the employer money or make the employer money
Send a job proposal suggesting how you would improve company operations
Create a short slide presentation on what solutions the company could use and send the CD by courier

The list is endless
