Secrets of the Job Hunt Career Podcast

Career Advice Podcasts & Job Seeker Network

An unemployed job seeker recently contacted me to tell me about his experience being laid off. He's started a blog which I think is a great idea to stay focused during a job search. These job search 'diaries' are a good way to stand out if you want potential employers to take notice.

Here's what he wrote:

It's called Jobless and Less (www.joblessandless.com) and talks about my experiences with layoffs, job searches and unemployment. I've been laid off 4 times in 8 years, most recently last October, so I've become an unwilling expert.

Unemployment blogs are becoming the next big thing as the jobless ranks swell. Creative people are using them as outlets for their talents and frustrations. There's some fascinating stuff out there. One of my other favorites is Unemploymentality (www.unemploymentality.com), which explores the condition of unemployment. And no movement would be complete without a site that chronicles carnage minute by minute. Layoff Blog (www.layoffblog.com) does just that.

I looked, Chris, and...well...how does one say this kindly? Anyone who wants to use a blog as a representation of him/herself to prospective employers MUST know how to spell (or, at least, how to use spell check.) He or she must also know how to use proper grammar, and must not mistakenly use words that only sound similar to the one actually required.

My advice to unemployed aspiring bloggers is that if writing is not your strong suit, a blog is probably not the best way for you to represent yourself- especially in this economy when the competition for jobs is incredibly high.
