Secrets of the Job Hunt

Career Advice Podcasts & Job Seeker Network

As I was trolling through the various resumes that some of the recruiters collected at my recent pink slip party the other night, one thing was clear.

They all looked the same.

So when I came across one job seeker I did a double take on what he had with him. An actual pink slip 'resume'. Ok so he had a 'normal' looking CV with him but he also had this little diddy.

Its the size of a Post-It sticky with a quick summary of his skills. I thought it was unique and a good example of how to stand out. Of all the job seekers I shook hands with that night, he stood out among them.

Let this be a lesson to the rest of those cookie cutter resumes that litter the desks of recruiters around the globe. Get creative.

Chris, I love this idea! I often feel stifled by resume writing. As much as I would love to unleash my creativity, our modern system imposes limitations. I find ways to sneak creativity in but always while still creating scannable, database friendly docs. I am a marketer first, resume writer third (marketer, storyteller, resume writer) and would love to infuse the search with more creativity. I have been fortunate to work with some applicants game enough to use marketing tactics (that have worked by the way) but many job seekers and hiring managers say they want different but really want more of the same. Let's hope creativity catches on!
