"Well, you know, I was a human being before I became a businessman." – George Soros
One of my friends just got a job. Believe it or not, it took him over a year (yes, 1 year). But, he kept a positive attitude, was diligent and has finally landed. So you are probably thinking that this guy must have been a real loser to take a year to find a job, but not so. This is a guy who had excellent job experience and great schools on his resume. So now you are probably thinking that he just didn't interview well. Wrong there too. His issue, which many of us suffer from, is that he has very specific job experience and needed to have "the stars align" (you know, being in the right place at the right time). But for that to happen, you need to create a lot of potential opportunities because the more opportunities you have the more likely you are to find a job. The opportunities you want to create are not the actual jobs, but making sure that people know (lots of people) that you are looking so that your name is likely to come up. Speaking of creating opportunities, today's list of companies range from Retail to Oil to Drugs. The companies listed below collectively have more than 4,440 job opportunities.
- Macy's - 96 on this year's list, with over 800 stores and 167,000 employees - yes they are big. Their careers page has a company overview center right with embedded links to their jobs page and college recruiting site. If you follow the jobs page link, you are led to their job search page. The top of this page has links for benefits, about Macy's and apply. Below this is a general job search box where you can search by job function or state. There were 2,350 job opportunities when I checked the page.
- International Paper - A global leader in paper and packaging goods, International Paper is ranked 97. Their careers page has links on the left hand side for Careers, Why IP, Submit Resume, Search Open Positions, Featured Positions and more. Center page is a company overview, with contact information on the right hand side of the page. Select Search Open Positions to link to their advanced search page. There were 121 job opportunities when I checked the page.
- Occidental Petroleum - Ranked 98 on the list, Occidental Petroleum is an international oil and gas exploration and production company. Their careers page is jam packed with information. Links on the left hand side of the page for Professionals, Students and available positions. Center page has a very comprehensive overview of the company with embedded links. Click "Available Positions" from the left hand side of the page, followed by "view open positions" (center page). There were 1,200 job opportunities when I checked the page.
- Travelers Cos. - Property and casualty insurance is what this company (ranked at 99) does. Their careers page has an embedded "Search Opportunities" link mid page, with links on the left for Job Search, Experienced professionals, New Graduates and more. There are additional related links on the right hand side of the page. Clicking Search Opportunities will lead to (you guessed it) job opportunities. There were over 500 job opportunities when I checked the page.
- Rite Aid - Rounding out at 100 on the list, Rite Aid is a chain drug store. Their careers page is very busy, with short intros to benefits, career opportunities, Internships and more. The left hand side of the page has similar links. Click Career Opportunities and this will lead to a page that has jobs by job type, click any of these to go to the main search page. There were over 275 job opportunities when I checked the page.
Good luck in your search.
