Secrets of the Job Hunt

Career Advice Podcasts & Job Seeker Network

Let's face it...a job search stinks. Maybe there are a few lone rangers out there who find a job search refreshing, but I think it is safe to say that for the masses, a job search is about as appealing as having an operation. In fact, sometimes I wonder if it isn't just about as painful!

Now, before you accuse me of being a pessimist, let me say that just because I think that the job search process stinks doesn't mean that I also think that a job search should be avoided at all costs. On the contrary, just like an operation, sometimes a job search is a very necessary thing and in the end can lead to a much improved outlook.

Many people ask me what I think is the biggest mistake that job seekers make, and more often than not, my answer surprises them. They expect me to say that the biggest mistake is not paying to have your resume done professionally as they know that I am first and foremost a resume writer. However, although I definitely think a professionally written resume done by a CPRW or other certified professional is a wise investment, I still don't think that the lack of a professional resume is the biggest mistake.

In my experience, the biggest mistake that most job seekers make is in poor planning and improper expectations. Even with a well-done resume, often they are still not really prepared to launch an effective job search. They are ill advised on how to use their resume, and they are hoping against hope that all they have to do is throw their resume out there on Monster or TheLadders.com and the job of their dreams will fall into their lap.

Unfortunately, it rarely works that way. A job search requires time, energy, and yes, even money. And you can waste all of those if you don't know how to conduct a good job search. That is why I have been working hard to promote my No-Nonsense Job Search Strategy approach. I know how much it is needed out there, especially for those who have spent the first 30 or so days of their job search convinced that some recruiter out there would be the answer to their prayers.

Excellent post, thanks.

You hit the "nail on the head." So many people waste time on job boards when they should be networking and mailing direct to potential employers. The ROI is far greater.

I am biased but a professionally written resume makes you stand way above the competition.

Hey, we all love the Internet...can't imagine life without it...but it is just a tool not a guarantee. The same is true of a well-done resume. Great tool, but you have to know how to use it!
