Secrets of the Job Hunt Career Podcast

Career Advice Podcasts & Job Seeker Network

If you owned your own business and you needed to hire someone to fill a vacancy in your company, what would be the first steps you would take to fill this opening? Nope, you aren't going to put an ad on a job board as the first step, yet, we as job seekers take that as our first step.

The pyramid above represents how jobs are filled. Approximately 80% are filled above the black line in this pyramid. That means that you are only seeing about 20% of the available jobs when you look on-line. No wonder you aren't seeing any good jobs.

They only way you will hear about the majority of jobs is by...

This is precisely why you need to target specific companies when you are networking. If you aren't focused in on companies, how will you effectively uncover the upcoming needs?

As the pyramid suggests, if you are networking, you will outwhit the competition. There are fewer people in line for an un-posted opportunity.

The other reason this is desirable for hiring managers is that candidates who they know or are closely linked to make "safer" hires. They know more about the person and it makes it less of a risk.

Create a target list of companies by visiting the libraries and reading the news. Their are many more companies out there than you probably know about.

This is a great post, and proves the point that you always need to be networking. This is something that is lost on many people. How many of you out there, are between jobs or whatever, and do not have a business card. I mean where is it written that you have to have a job to have a business card? Number one mistake right there, because I will let you in on this secret real networking happens in person and professionally this is started with the exchange of a business card.
