Secrets of the Job Hunt Network

Where career advice pros and job seekers connect

LinkedIn the "business social network" is quietly becoming a national resume database.

If you are not on LinkedIn, then you are missing out on your chance to be found by recruiters. You see my friends, with more than 20 million people on it, recruiters from all industries are now actively sourcing candidates for jobs. LinkedIn just improved its searching capabilities so that recruiters can more easily find you. This is not good news for national job boards like Monster who sell access to their resumes. LinkedIn users are more like passive candidates and more highly prized.

Recruiters can now search by title, company or keywords to find candidates. According to their site;

Unlike other recruiting tools that only enable users to reach active inbound candidates, LinkedIn Recruiter also gives users the unique advantage of being able to find and communicate with passive candidates.

In case you forgot a LinkedIn profile is also a virtual online resume (you can even download your profile as a PDF). So if want to increase your chances of being found online get yourself on the new national resume database.

Chris,
Excellent point. The fact that companies prefer to try to hire people who aren't looking for a job makes linkedin a gold mine for them. So, the best thing for an out-of-work job seeker to do may be to post on linkedin and act like they aren't seeking an opportunity. How ironic is that?

I've said for many years now, todays job market is all about being found, rather than finding jobs.

Chris,
I agree. If only people never needed to find a job that wasn't finding them! Speaking of linking, I blogged about this and linked to your blog today, so thanks for the inspiration!

Then there are groups within LI that help your exposure.

Of course once you get the recommended amount (60 Direct connections according to LI)....then you have to try and get recommendations form your Customers, fellow Employees or other partners you may have worked with.

Jason Alba writes a terrific Book (and does Seminars) about LI called "I'm on LinkedIn...Now What"

He has built an entire business on that called JibberJobber.com.

Check it out.... it should assist your search efforts.
